Who are Thrór and Thráin in the Hobbit?

Q: Who are Thrór and Thráin in the Hobbit?

ANSWER: Jeffrey Thomas is playing Thrór in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” movies. Mike Mizrahi is playing Thráin in “The Hobbit” movies. Jeffrey Thomas is a New Zealand actor who has earned a worldwide reputation among fans of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Legend of the Seeker, Xena: Warrior Princess, and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. Thomas is a seasoned actor whose portrayal of Thrór in “The Hobbit” will be highly anticipated. Since Thrór does not appear in the book, it is assumed that his appearance in the movie will represent material from the appendices of The Lord of the Rings.

Mike Mizrahi is also a New Zealand actor whose career has not reached the internal markets as often as Jeffrey Thomas’, so this role in “The Hobbit” should be an important opportunity for him. Mizrahi, however, has been active in New Zealand’s acting industry for many years. He has a few appearances in the Hercules franchise, according to his IMDB profile.

Of course, there is one “flashback” scene in the book, where Thorin recounts Smaug’s attack on Erebor, where Thrór and Thráin escape the dragon’s assault and join Thorin and a few other Dwarves. The fuller history of Thrór and Thráin, however, is only provided in The Lord of the Rings. Thrór was the last King of Durin’s line to rule the Longbeard Dwarves in one of their great halls after their Third Age year 1981 flight from Khazad-dûm.

Smaug drove the Dwarves out of Erebor in Third Age year 2770 and Thrór was slain by Azog the Orc in Khazad-dûm in the year 2790. Thráin then became King of Durin’s Folk (the Longbeard Dwarves) but he only reigned until the year 2850, when he died in the dungeons of Dol Guldur, after Sauron took the last of the Dwarves’ seven Rings of Power from him. Thráin briefly united all seven of the Dwarven peoples in an alliance against the Orcs of the Misty Mountains. The War of the Dwarves and Orcs lasted from Third Age year 2800 to 2864.
